Work from VS Code: edit, push and deploy

The recommended way: edit in VS Code, commit and push — the site deploys itself. Plus uploading on save with the SFTP extension.

  1. The recommended setup
  2. Open your project
  3. Commit and push from VS Code
  4. Watch it deploy
  5. Upload on save with the SFTP extension (optional)
  6. Node.js, Python and Java apps over SFTP
  7. Why not VS Code Remote-SSH?

The recommended setup

Keep your project on your own computer, open it in VS Code, and connect its GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket repository under Git deployments. Then the whole workflow is: edit → commit → push → live, with a health check and automatic rollback if something breaks.

1. Open your project

VS Code → File → Open Folder → choose the project folder. Open the built-in terminal with Terminal → New Terminal (or Ctrl+`).

2. Commit and push from VS Code

Click the Source Control icon on the left (the branching icon). Changed files are listed. Type a message such as "Update home page" in the box, press Commit, then Sync Changes (or Push). The same in the terminal:

git add .
git commit -m "Update home page"
git push

3. Watch it deploy

Open Git deployments in the dashboard: the push appears with its stages — source, build, deploy, health check — and the live log. When it shows Succeeded, refresh your site.

Upload on save with the SFTP extension (optional)

Good for small PHP or static sites without Git. Install the SFTP extension (by Natizyskunk) from the Extensions panel, add your SSH key in the dashboard first (see Create an SSH key), press Ctrl/⌘+Shift+P → SFTP: Config, and use:

{
  "name": "Cloud Ninza",
  "host": "server1.cloudninza.com",
  "protocol": "sftp",
  "port": 22,
  "username": "USERNAME",
  "privateKeyPath": "~/.ssh/id_ed25519",
  "remotePath": "/home/USERNAME/web/yourdomain.com/public_html",
  "uploadOnSave": true
}

Node.js, Python and Java apps over SFTP

Set remotePath to /home/USERNAME/web/yourdomain.com/app. After uploading, restart the app from App settings (or run mkdir -p tmp && touch tmp/restart.txt in the terminal); after changing dependencies press Deploy so they are installed.

Why not VS Code Remote-SSH?

Remote-SSH needs SSH port forwarding, which is switched off on our servers for every account as a security measure — it is how one account could otherwise reach services it should not. Git deployments and the SFTP extension give you the same editing comfort without opening that door.
